Whether you’re a student trying to figure it all out, or you’re an executive who has reached the pinnacle of their organization, there are four things everyone needs to be successful.
#1- Vision
What is your vision? For yourself? For your life? Your organization? Your vision should be clear, concise, and aspirational. Your vision should be a motivating force, something that gets you out of bed every day and inspires you to keep going, even when things get tough. Here are a few examples of vision statements that meet the mark:
Our vision is to create a better everyday life for many people. - IKEA
A world without poverty. - OXFAM
A world where everyone has a decent place to live. - Habitat for Humanity
#2- Mission
A mission entails specific aims and values that allow you to set forth the vision you hope to create. What values do you have for yourself? What values do you want to develop within your organization?
While many use vision and mission interchangeably, they are two distinct concepts. The vision is a description of a future state. A mark that you will remain in continual pursuit. Your mission is the execution of your vision. It is the description of your approach to achieve your vision.
For instance, the Habitat Humanity vision statement written above here’s their mission statement: “Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.” This mission statement illustrates their values and how they will pursue the vision.
#3- Goals
Make sure your goals are SMART goals! Specific, measurable, aligned with your vision & mission, and are time-bound. If you don’t put a time frame on your goals, it’s not going to happen.
#4- Action Plan
“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.” ~Joel A. Barker
Everyone needs an action plan: specific steps you will take every day to ensure you are on the right track to achieving your goals. Make a list. Set monthly & quarterly goals. Ensure your actions steps align with your values and are ultimately continually striving to make your vision a reality.
These four foundational elements are critical to personal and professional success. Before you do anything else, make sure your vision, mission, goals, and action plan are written, understood, and accessible.
