We hear the saying, "think outside the box," as an added challenge to further progress. For example, at work, within our personal lives, parenting, maintaining relationships, etc.
But, we don't talk about the value we get from working with what we have- inside the box.
'Inside the box thinking' is centered around areas in which we're doing fine. Things or aspects of our lives that are working well- still valuable, contributing to the bottom line.
If it's not broken, why are you trying to fix them?
Yes, there can be some minor tweaks here and there. Encourage those, but don't change what's not broken.
If they contribute to your overall strategy, vision and mission, and are allowing you to meet your objectives, stick with them!
When do we need out-of-the-box thinking?
When things begin to feel stagnant, or they start to decline, that is when we need out-of-the-box thinking.
Why do we hear about outside-of-the-box thinking all the time?
Because we as people fail to pivot when necessary. We are creatures of habit and can get too comfortable in our respective boxes. Stepping outside the box requires us to get uncomfortable and change. That's where growth and expansion take place.
If things are working well, that doesn't mean you should take your eyes off the future, the market, and the global space we all live in now or stay within the box for the lack of better terms. So, if it's working well currently, how can it be improved to keep up with the changing times? What efficiencies might be realized? How can you maximize your current greatness?
There is a space and place for both inside and outside of the box thinking. Make room in your departments for both, especially when making leadership decisions.
